I don’t seem to remember my teachers mentioning the story of rancher Francisco Lopez who, in 1842, first discovered gold in Southern California. Of course, one of the key events in California history was the big Gold Rush that started in 1849 where thousands of “49ers” flooded into the Sacramento Valley area to seek their fortunes.
